What exactly is a StopOMeter?

The Highway Code states quite clearly that you should never drive so fast that you cannot stop comfortably on your own side of the road within the distance you can see to be clear. This is very sound, but not very practical advice, unless you know the stopping distance for every speed that you are likely to travel at.

Experienced drivers will have covered many miles before they began to understand the relationship between speed of travel and the distance (and time) required for them to come to a stop. As a new driver, you do not have the luxury of covering many miles
over many years to learn this relationship as for safetys sake, you need to know this information now!

All cars are required to have a speedometer fitted, which is all well and good apart from the fact that a speedometer provides hardly any safety information, least of all the crucially important information about stopping distances. This rather strange state of affairs has persisted for many years, until now....
